NHBC Buildmark is the market leading warranty scheme for new and newly converted private sector housing in UK with over 80% cover of newly built homes. Most reputable house builders and developers will be part of the NHBC Buildmark scheme.
Under the terms and conditions of the NHBC Buildmark insurance, house owners have cover against faulty flues from gas appliances. In the first 2 years after construction or conversion, the builder or developer who built the house will usually put right any defect in the flue. During the following 8 years (up to ten years after conversion or construction), NHBC will pay the cost of putting right any defect in a flue where that defect causes a present or imminent danger to the occupants.
It's worth adding that the NHBC Buildmark warranty scheme is extensive and you must make certain that your builder or developer has your brand new home covered by this. It covers you if your builder doesn't complete your brand new home to NHBC standards and if any defects arise from this in the first two years. It also gives you coverage for another 8 years for structural and safety aspects.
If your property is not a new build or either falls outside the NHBC insurance or if it isn't covered then it is strongly advised you get your boiler, other gas appliances and obviously the gas flue checked on a regular basis. This is vital for reasons of safety. Now and then while carrying out these checks gas engineers have had to take fast action due to the danger posed to the occupants of the property. Remember, if you're a landlord then you are legally compelled to have an annual gas safety check carried out on each gas appliance and flue.
SIS Construction only use Gas Safe Engineers to do work and checks on gas appliances, boilers and flues. Actually only Gas Safe registered engineers may legally (and safely) work on gas appliances and fittings in UK. The Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the UK gas engineer registration body in 2010. The Gas Safe Register is a full list of all engineers who are certified to work on gas appliances, flues and fittings. You can check whether an engineer is Gas Safe registered on the Gas Safe web site - ensure you check out any person who comes to do work on or inspect your gas appliances and fittings. The Gas Safe site also has a lot of safety info about gas flues and appliances.
